Checklist: find these in the agreement
- Monthly dues, and what they cover. Which clubs, which hours, which classes.
- Joining or activation fee. A one-time charge.
- Annual fee. Charged each year on top of dues; 5 of the 12 gyms we checked list one, from $49.00 to $69.99.
- Commitment length. Month to month, or a fixed term? Look for “non-cancelable” or early-termination wording.
- Auto-renewal. Does the term roll over by itself, and for how long?
- Notice period. 3 of 12 gyms state 30 days or more. Dues can keep running through the notice (24 Hour Fitness says so).
- Method of notice. Online, kiosk, phone, form, in person or mail. Some gyms list one route; others leave it to each club.
- Freezes and holds. Whether you can pause, for how long and at what cost.
- Price changes. Whether dues or fees can rise during your term.
How to cancel cleanly
- Find the cancellation clause and note the notice period and the route the contract names.
- Use that route, and keep proof. Save the confirmation page, the email, or the date and name of the person you spoke to. Ask for written confirmation of the end date.
- Count the notice from the day you gave it, and plan the last billing date with the notice period in mind.
- Check your next statement. If charges continue after the confirmed end date, take the proof to the gym first, then dispute the charge with your card company. Changing your card number is often not enough. Source: FTC consumer alert, Aug 2025
- If the rules look different from what you were told, ask your provincial, state or national consumer protection office. Rules differ by place, and we do not give legal advice.
